Fisher Peak is a sprawling summit in Kananaskis Country just west of Calgary and one of the highest peaks in the area. Though visible from Kananaskis Trail (Highway 40), it has not seen many ascents. A mountain bike is a time saver on the approach, and even then, the trip is a pretty full day. Our ascent was in July 1996, on a clear but cool summer day, by which time most of the snow had finally melted off.

Rockband on Fisher Pk Scrambling up a rockband on the return trip. The crux is downclimbing the high rockband at centre of the picture. On return, you ascend it, which is easier than descending it.

OnFisherssummit.jpg (19497 bytes)Blue sky on top of Fisher Peak, some 6 hours after starting from our car. The ascent was a good start to the scrambling season in the Canadian Rockies. This scramble is not as exposed as Mount Smuts, but has a longer approach which keeps the hordes away.
