Fisher Peak 3053 m
Kananaskis Country, Alberta
View of Fisher Peak on approach from meadows
Fisher Peak is a sprawling summit in Kananaskis Country just west of Calgary and one of the highest peaks in the area. Though visible from Kananaskis Trail (Highway 40), it has not seen many ascents. A mountain bike is a time saver on the approach, and even then, the trip is a pretty full day. Our ascent was in July 1996, on a clear but cool summer day, by which time most of the snow had finally melted off.

Heading along the ridge near on the upper part
of the mountain.
Scrambling up a rockband on the return trip. The crux is downclimbing the high rockband at
centre of the picture. On return, you ascend it, which is easier than descending it.
Here's a close-up of the crux,
where some people turn back. We were glad to follow the obvious red line. You climb down
this on the ascent.
Steep scrambling going back
up the crux rockband; Bike helmets optional.
A short but steep scramble up the rock step, taken on the way back.
Blue sky on top of Fisher Peak,
some 6 hours after starting from our car. The ascent was a good start to the scrambling
season in the Canadian Rockies. This scramble is not as exposed as Mount Smuts, but has a longer approach which keeps the
hordes away.
This ascent is just one of over 155 scrambles fully described in my new guidebook, Scrambles in the Canadian Rockies, which can be ordered online by clicking here.
